DEP purchases 3,600 acres for Blackwater River State Forest

by Margaret Willard

The acquisition of over 3,600 acres within Santa Rosa County’s Wolfe Creek Forest Florida Forever project has been finalized by the Department of Environmental Protection. The land lies within the Florida Wildlife Corridor and joins the Blackwater River State Forest and more conservation lands around Whiting Field Naval Air Station.

The connected tracts of state forests form a corridor, allowing wildlife to access 35 miles of streams feeding into Big Coldwater Creek and Big Juniper Creek.

The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Florida Forest Service will manage the property as an addition to Blackwater River State Forest.
