The Tampa Bay Rays have long supported LGBTQ+ rights, but the club’s attempt to show inclusiveness ended up in controversy Saturday when five players refused to wear the rainbow-colored logos on their jerseys and caps.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that pitchers Jason Adam, Jalen Beeks, Brooks Raley, Jeffrey Springs, and Ryan Thompson removed the burst logo from their uniforms and wore the standard cap.
Adam said his decision was based on his belief in Jesus.
“It’s not judgmental. It’s not looking down,” he said. “It’s just what we believe the lifestyle he’s encouraged us to live.”
