Rebekah Jones wins Democratic nomination for CD 1

by Margaret Willard

Democrat Rebekah Jones will face Republican Congressman U.S Rep. Matt Gaetz to represent Florida’s 1st Congressional District.

Jones defeated opponent Peggy Schiller with 62.5% of the vote. Schiller tried to get Jones removed from the ballot in a lawsuit that she had filed, arguing that Jones had not been registered as a Democrat one year before qualifying. A judge disqualified Jones from the ballot, but she was granted a stay after an appeal.

Jones is a former data scientist with the Florida Department of Health. She made national headlines when she was fired for refusing to manipulate COVID-19 data.
