Matt Gaetz bucks party on expanded drilling measure

GOP Rep. stands with Florida’s congressional delegation to oppose increased Gulf Coast oil production

by Margaret Willard

As the U.S. seeks alternative sources to Russian oil, congressional Republicans on Tuesday pushed legislation aimed at boosting domestic drilling.

Rep. Matt Gaetz cast the sole GOP vote against the bill, which would have reauthorized construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and ratcheted up natural gas production. While Gaetz said he supports many of those steps, he could not vote for legislation that also could open the Gulf of Mexico to more drilling.

Florida’s congressional delegation has been unified in opposing drilling off Florida’s coast. They pushed for a 10-year ban on oil drilling approved by then-President Donald Trump.
