Florida hospital first in state to use 3D printing in heart surgery

by Margaret Willard

Tampa General Hospital is the first in Tampa Bay, and one of the first in the country, to mend hearts and improve surgical experiences through 3D printing.

Teaming up with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, TGH is using 3D printing to plan for aortic valve replacements, trauma surgery, cancer surgery and other reconstructions.

“We’re able to translate medical imaging data into 3D models, and these can be used in clinical decision-making, medical simulation and training, as well as patient education,’’ said USF associate professor Summer Decker.

“The work being done here is truly transformational,’’ said John Couris, TGH president.
