Pensacola bakery one of Florida’s most endangered historical sites

by

For more than half a century, Smith’s Bakery was a thriving business located on the northwest corner of Belmont-DeVilliers, the intersection for Black-owned businesses in Pensacola.

But now the building sits on the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 to Save list.

It was designed to increase awareness of landmarks and history. The list includes historical buildings that are considered by the public to be the most at risk of being lost.

“This building has roots,” Pensacola historian Robin Reshard said. “What you’re seeing is above ground. It’s like an iceberg, so you’re just seeing the tip of it.”
