Former Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office deputy sentenced to 10 months in federal prison

by Margaret Willard

A former Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office deputy was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison.

Joseph Barnes Jr. had pleaded guilty to giving a false statement to a federal officer. An investigation found that Barnes helped a drug trafficker distribute narcotics in the Gadsden County area.

Barnes took no action when his K-9 alerted him the trafficker had drugs in his vehicle, instead giving the trafficker advice on how to evade law enforcement in the future. He made multiple false statements to FBI agents about his knowledge of the narcotics and his role in facilitating the distribution of the drugs.
