Byan Jones, a Republican running against U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida’s 1st Congressional District withdrew his candidacy. The Air Force veteran cited the candidacy of Marine Corps veteran Mark Lombardo as a factor in his decision to drop out.
Lombardo filed to run in June and pledged to spend $1 million of his own money on his campaign. Jones said having two veterans on the ballot wouldn’t be in the best interest of the district.
Now Lombardo, also a retired FedEx executive, will go head-to-head with Gaetz in the GOP Primary. That election will be held on Aug. 23.
