Panhandle sheriff to homeowners: ‘shoot burglars’

by Margaret Willard

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson offered a word of advice last week to homeowners: If you cross paths with a burglar, “shoot them.”

Johnson’s remarks came after a homeowner opened fire at a man suspected in a four-home burglary spree. At a press conference, Johnson told reporters the homeowner did nothing wrong.

“If someone is breaking into your house, you’re more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County,” Johnson said. “We prefer that you do actually.”

The burglar, Brandon Harris, was arrested by deputies after a long foot chase. He faces multiple charges and a $157,500 bond.
