Fort Walton-Destin Hospital celebrates Donate Life Month

by carlislewillard

In 2021, HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital received 10 organ donations that saved 36 lives. The hospital celebrated those lifesaving procedures last week as part of National Donate Life Month, held every April since 2003.

JoLynn Peoples shared that when her 16-year-old son, Travis Peoples, died in a dirt bike accident in 2007, her mother – his grandmother – received his kidney two days later. Kim Abbey went on to live another eight years with her grandson’s kidney. His organs were donated to three others, too.

More than 5,000 patients are on transplant waiting lists across Florida. Thousands more await tissue donations.
