Pensacola: A city of resilience

by Margaret Willard

The history of Pensacola, one of the oldest European settlements in the United States, has been a tumultuous one.

Pensacola was first discovered in 1559 by the conquistador Don Tristan de Luna Y Arellano. Since its discovery, the town has been inhabited by the French, British, Confederacy, and Spanish multiple times, until eventually, the United States claimed it as their territory.

In addition to ownership upheaval, the town was pulverized by hurricanes, burned to the ground, and has been the site of many battles.

Despite its constant beatings, Pensacola continued to be rebuilt and reconstructed and is now a popular vacation destination.”
