St. George Island Fire Chief suspended over racial slur

by Margaret Willard

St. George Island Fire Chief Kevin Delahanty is off the job after he hurled a racial slur at a Black vacationer in late March.

Video taken by the vacationer, Kylon Wishom of Louisiana, captured the exchange.

It shows Delahanty confronting the beachgoer. It ends with the volunteer fire chief shouting a racial slur before speeding away.

The St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department suspended Delahanty at a special meeting. He must also attended anger management counseling and diversity training.

“The behavior reported is not representative of our organization or the values of our community,” the board said in a statement.
