Escambia County hooked in libel case

by carlislewillard

Escambia County is on the hook for Commissioner Doug Underhill‘s legal fees. Escambia County Circuit Court Judge Jan Shackelford ordered the county Thursday to cover Underhill’s $24,616 bill.

Underhill was accused of libeling a political consultant on Facebook in 2019. A judge, though, threw out the case.

According to the Pensacola News Journal, the county’s payment will include $1,151 in interest, which will grow at an annual rate of 4.25% until the debt is paid.

Voters elected Underhill to represent Escambia County’s District 2 in 2014. He is a 27-year Navy veteran who still serves as a reservist in an intelligence unit.
