Pensacola Bay Bridge disaster leads to proposed construction company liability requirements

New bill would require state contractors to cover third-party damages

by carlislewillard

New legislation would outline construction company liability after barges took out the Pensacola Bay Bridge during Hurricane Sally.

Because of the disaster, more than 1,000 Northwest Florida business owners and residents are suing Skanska, and are seeking economic damages caused by the bridge being out of commission for eight months.

The bill (HB 157), sponsored by Rep. Alex Andrade, would require state road contractors working over navigable waters to have a liability insurance policy to cover third-party damages. The legislation had unanimous support in the House Commerce Committee and will next go to a full vote by the House.
